    以音樂語言學去探討音樂意義 (4): 修辭性的 Head Motive 在詩歌107中的運用

    前言: 本文章接續  2010-12-28 ,2011-01-03 及 2011-01-06 前三篇文章去探討主導動機  Head Motive 怎樣以音樂修辭的方式在作品中表達音樂意義。

    大約在六,七十年代,有一位語言學家,同時也是一位音樂理論學家,Leonard Meyer,建立了一套名為音樂資訊的理論 (Information Theory),來解釋音樂怎樣傳遞意義 (convey meaning),和傳遞甚麼意義。他的論著 (如 Arts and Ideas) 則集中探討音樂中的 Absolute Meaning,即絕對意義。這意義和標題意義 (progammatic Meaning) 不同。音樂中的絕對意義是指不帶標題 (progammatic title) 或任何標題參考 (progammatic references)  作指引的純器樂作品  (instrumental musical works) 所能傳遞的意義。由於沒有了文字 (text) 作為參巧指引,聽者就只得靠聆聽音樂在作品中的 syntatic and rhetorical design,(語法修辭設計),來了解這首音樂作品的意義。Leonard Meyer 認為音樂作品中的語法是既定的法則,例如調聲和聲體系的法則 (Tonal Harmony Syntax),以及根據個別作品中的作曲修辭法則 (Musical Rhetoric),都是可以很快,很輕易地被聽者辨認出來。由於這些既定的法則支配著樂音和和聲 (melodic notes and harmonic progression) 的進行,聽者就很容易預期到音樂進行的方式,比如在 Cadence (終止式) 裏我們必會用到特定的 Cadential Chords 來進行 (如: 正格終止是用 V Chord 進行到  I  Chord,I Chord 就是預期的音樂結果,假如聽者有足夠資訊知道音樂正來到 cadence 就可以。)。Leonard Meyer 稱這種音樂的 “預期” 稱為 (muscial expectancy / implication) 。當聆聽音樂時,如果樂音所產生的 expectancy 或  implication 能按既定的語法修辭設計,進行到預期結果的音樂上,這就稱為 realization (解決) 。

    讓我們看看下面的例子,去進一步了解語法修辭設計怎樣產生 expectancy/implication and realization。

    我在這裡用一些符號去代表每一樂句的修辭設計的意義,這裡有四句。

    從上面例子的修辭設計,你會 “預期” (expectancy) 第四樂句的最後三個音是甚麼? 當然,你會推斷是三個 *,即 ***。如果樂音真的是出現三個 * 的話,我們就稱為 realization 。作品中的音樂意義,也就以類似的方式,向聽者傳遞出來。

    我現在以sol-fa name 再設計一個音樂的修辭例子以供參巧。

    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-

    第四樂句,不須多說,聽者一定會 expect  sol-sol , 會出現。如果真的出現了這幾個樂音,我們就說音樂已按著既定法則 realized 。音樂就是這樣 convey meaning。

    可是,Meyer 也發現,音樂上的 syntactic meaning,不一定 (不是一定不) 能令引起聽者的情緒反應和感受。就如一個旁觀者不一定會由於見到街上有人吵架而自己發起脾氣來。因為他不是有份參予吵架,只是冷眼旁觀這場鬧劇而矣。但他是知道甚麼事正在發生的,皆因他接收到應有的資訊。因此,Meyer 就認為當聽者所 expect 的音樂在進行中,不能以其正常既定 (normal path) 的到達預期結果的 realization 時,聽者就會產生 emotional response。他就會因而 frustrated,因為他感受到預期以外的干擾 (emotional interruption)。

    我再用以上的音樂修辭例子解說這種情況:

    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-si-si !!!

    第四樂句的修辭方式改變了。這令聽者感到意料之外 (surprise)。就因這組樂音進行了 deviation (差),聽者要重新了解過音樂現在將會轉到哪裡去。可能需要些時間調整,聽者才可以再產生另一組合理,可明白的 expectancy ,因他這時才能掌握到吹夠資訊 ,知道作品中新的修辭意義是甚麼。因此,deviation 也是另一次的 expectancy。而 Surprise and Ambiguity 也就是能引起聽者的 aesthetical response 的主要方式。

    例如:

    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-sol-sol,
    mi-mi-mi-si-si !!!
    mi-mi-mi-si-si-si !!!
    mi-mi-mi-si-si-si-si !!!

    或者聽到這裡,聽者才能再次產生一個可以作推斷的 expectancy,從以預期下一個樂句的 realization 會是:

    mi-mi-mi-si-si-si-si-si !!!

    Leonard Meyer 認為 音樂是通過語法修辭模式, 藉引起聽者的 expectancy/realization 去傳遞意義,促使他們產生 aesthetic response。

    可是,在我看來,音樂要令聽者引起 emotional response,單靠 syntatic and rhetorical meaning 是不足的 (不是不能)。音樂要同時傳遞 semantic meaning ,語義上的意義,亦即借助標題和標題性的參巧文本, programmatic title and programmatic references,才能產生足夠的音樂意義,完整地引起聽者的美學和感情反應 (emotional/aesthetic response)。聽者這時成為第一身參予聆聽的人,直接感受音樂傳遞的意義所帶來的情緒變化,而不只是旁聽者。在這裏,musical syntax 是載體 (尤似 一個 operative platform ,運作平台),而 semantic meaning 是受體 (informative objects ,運作其上的資訊)。關於我這個變化了的 interpretative  theory (詮釋理論),雖然現在還沒有完全,我仍會嘗試以另一篇文章探討,與讀者分享。

    明白了 musical syntax 之後,我現在以詩歌 107首中運用的修辭性 Head Motive,去探索樂音所能傳遞的意義,和對聽者所能引起的美學反應。
