據皇家音樂學院的報告指出，香港投考鋼琴的人數眾多，每年均有增加。考生一般彈奏技巧也不俗，但就缺乏良好的個人音樂修養。此皆因學習鋼琴之學員，一般只著重彈奏技巧的訓練，卻往往忽略了同步培養音樂藝術的修養，以及加深對音樂作品的了解。坊間的鋼琴講座或課程，也大多只著重個別作品的彈奏技巧和演譯，目的是為了考試，但忽略了對整個鋼琴音樂發展的一個縱向性歷史宏觀及其相關美學的研討。要知明白某一類音樂的形成和其風格的演進，是增進作品了解本身的第一步，而鍵盤樂器更影著整個西方音樂的發展。故本課程希望能就此一空白，為鋼琴教學上作出一點補充。

本課程內容包括探討從古曲及浪漫時期，到二十世紀初的鋼琴音樂風格，及樂種的演變和其歷史發展，並以作曲家及其作品為中心，研討與之相關的美學。範圍包括各類小型獨奏舞曲，以至二十世紀較大型的現代標題作品，從而幫助學員認識鋼琴樂曲的美和培養其欣賞能力，並加深自已對所練習的樂曲之認識。

本課程是完成八級樂理之後的進階課程。凡有志於繼續進修音樂，加深對音樂的認識，又或準備投考其他相關的音樂公開考試的學員，皆適宜報讀。

The course is open to all students with either some experiences with, or interest in, the piano. It offers an overview of the major piano music composers through a montage of topics that focus on the personalities that they were involved with it, the repertories they either composed for, or performed on it, and the social and cultural milieus that provided the context for its extraordinary rise as arguably the most important instrument in the history of Western Classical Music. Students will be given an opportunity to study the piano as a medium of musical aesthetics and expression, an occasion for the display of virtuosity, a palette of various styles and genres, a staple of the 19th-century bourgeois home, and an object of almost maniacal veneration. This course can be regarded as a course for further study after the completion of the Grade 8 theory lesson. Knowledge taught in the course is useful for dealing with other external examinations, as well as for one’s self-learning.
